Academic Content and Conjunction with Other Courses/Semesters

The mobilities of global tourism are intimately entangled in broader geopolitical issues such as inequality, sustainability and indeed sustainable development. For centuries, travel, and more recently tourism, has been a powerful influence on the way people perceive the world, the way that values are constructed and how governments respond to those values. These global politics of tourism are central to gain a deeper understanding of how events in one part of the world can have far reaching implications for local communities on the other side of the world. The course will look closer into a range of contexts where the global flows are informed by and inform global, national, regional and local institutions and organisations. Moreover, we focus on the challenges and opportunities that organisations and institutions face when dealing with concept of sustainability that has become central to tourism development. The course will address various trends and explore how these can be integrated with novel approaches to sustainability in tourism development.

The course builds upon existing knowledge and experiences from previous courses (Global Tourism and Transnational Mobilities and Cultural Encounters in Tourism) and focus on different concepts of sustainability related to tourism development. The core concepts of the course will be discussed and explored through a mix of conceptual articles, case studies and different types of didactical material.
